Wildflower Show

A Celebration of Darling’s Botanical Heritage

Darling Wildflower Show

The Darling Wildflower Show is one of the oldest and most loved community events in South Africa, celebrating over a century of local floral heritage.

Held each spring, it showcases the incredible diversity of the region’s flora — from the delicate bulbs of the Renosterveld to the vivid daisies of the Sandveld.

The Show was first held in 1917, and over time it has grown into a four-day festival that brings together farmers, botanists, artists, and visitors from across the country.
It stands as both a cultural celebration and a conservation education platform, promoting awareness of Darling’s fragile ecosystems.

What You’ll Experience

The Botanical Hall

Explore curated botanical displays, guided walks through natural veld, conservation exhibits, and the unique heritage that shaped a century-old floral tradition. Each element of the show is designed to educate, inspire, and celebrate Darling’s botanical richness.

Guided Floral Walks

Expert-led walks through natural veld on participating reserves. Learn about geophytes, pollination, habitat threats, and the restoration work done by local landowners.

Conservation Exhibits

Our conservation exhibits highlight the ongoing environmental work taking place across Darling. Displays cover alien-clearing programmes, rare-species monitoring, habitat mapping, and the long-term research partnerships between the Society, SANBI, and local farmers.

Community & Culture

The Wildflower Show is not only a botanical celebration — it is a community tradition. Visitors can enjoy local food stalls, handmade crafts, family-friendly activities, and heritage displays that reflect over a century of flower culture in Darling.

From stories of historic flower-gathering families to the modern conservation ethos that guides today’s landowners, the Show connects people to the living heritage that shaped the town and its surrounding landscapes.

Why It Matters

Your visit does far more than simply add another number to our attendance — it directly strengthens the Darling Wildflower Society’s year-round conservation work.

Every ticket sold and every visitor who walks through our doors helps ensure that Darling’s botanical heritage is protected for future generations. The funds raised through the Wildflower Show are a vital lifeline: they enable environmental education programmes in our schools and community, support the restoration and protection of threatened veld habitats, and make it possible for our volunteers and partners to continue their biodiversity monitoring throughout the year.

These resources are used with great care. They help us conduct detailed seasonal surveys, track vulnerable and endemic species, and respond when rare plants need targeted protection. They support alien-clearing efforts, veld management initiatives, and long-term research that guides responsible stewardship of our unique ecosystems.

In choosing to attend the Show, you become part of this legacy of custodianship. You help safeguard landscapes that hold species found nowhere else on Earth. You help keep knowledge alive, nurture a culture of conservation, and ensure that Darling’s extraordinary floral diversity continues to thrive.

Your presence truly makes a difference.
